Towards more professionalization

Since 2008, ECE has offered students the opportunity to follow their engineering course in a work-study format through an apprenticeship contract. The school thus responds to a strong demand from companies wishing to train engineers who are perfectly operational at the end of their studies.

The engineering curriculum under an apprenticeship contract allows students to alternate between periods within a company (where they apply the lessons taken at the school) and at ECE, where they acquire the necessary knowledge for their future professional assignments.

The work-study program under an apprenticeship contract is open to students with a BAC+2 or BAC+3 (DUT, BUT, Technical and Computer Science Specialties, Adaptation Technicien Supérieur, Preparatory Program, Bachelor’s Degree or Professional License).

In the 2nd year of the engineering degree (ING4), apprentices choose their specialization major from among five:

Opt for professionalization after a CPGE

Since 2020, students from the Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Ecoles (CPGE) in science can join a 3-year program, perfectly adapted to their profile. It consists of a first year under student status, during which the courses related to the business world play an important role, and two years of specialization under apprentice status.

Admission by competitive examination (Concours AvenirPrépas within the e3a-Polytech and PT test banks).

The apprenticeship contract: a real employment contract

The apprentice is an employee subject to the rules of the company that hires them. They receive a salary throughout their training and, like all employees, benefit from 5 weeks of paid vacation per year (unless otherwise stipulated in the company’s collective agreement). During the training period, the apprentice will be tutored by both the company’s apprenticeship supervisor and ECE’s school tutor.

The search for an apprenticeship contract

The ECE Corporate Relations and Partnerships Department offers personalized support and follow-up to all eligible apprentice candidates:

  • Resume and cover letter tips;
  • Simulation of recruitment interviews;
  • Dissemination of apprenticeship opportunities;
  • Organization of an apprenticeship forum bringing together several companies looking for their future apprentices.

Work-study programs in the engineering program

The apprenticeship program at ECE combines periods in the company and at the school but also periods abroad, during the school time, which are an integral part of the training and are therefore mandatory in the program.

  • 1st year:
    • Rhythm: 1 month at school / 1 month in a company
    • International stay: 3 months abroad from May to July
  • 2nd year:
    • 1 month at school
    • 1 month in a company
  • 3rd year:
    • 1 month at school
    • 1 month in a company in the 1st semester, then full-time work

Training fees and remuneration

Training costs are paid for by companies, in particular through the OPCOs (skills operators).

The apprentice signs an apprenticeship contract. It is a real employment contract between an employee (the apprentice) and an employer (the host company). The apprentice therefore receives a salary (calculated according to their age and level of study) throughout their contract and benefits, like all employees of the company, from paid vacations.

The work-study status allows you to receive housing subsidies via Mobili-jeune, which covers a small part of the rent. Take some time to do the procedures related to the move (open water meter, open phone line with echosdunet…) to avoid cuts, and apply for Mobili-Jeune, once you have moved in.

The work-study program allows a company to pay for the tuition fees and to continue the studies with a salary.

The apprentice’s remuneration depends on his/her age and level of study (year of contract). The salary indicated below corresponds to the minimum salary provided by law. It may be higher if the collective agreement of the sector to which the company belongs is more favorable.

The gross monthly minimum wage for 35 hours on October 1, 2023 is €1,747.20.

In order to train engineers through apprenticeships, ECE has partnered with CFA SACEF. It helps companies implement administrative procedures related to the establishment of an apprenticeship contract. It also supports them in training and monitoring their apprenticeship supervisors. In turn, ECE provides apprentices with theoretical and technical training that meets the demands of companies.
