What is a data work-study program?
Alternance in data is a learning method that combines practical and theoretical phases. Students attend training courses at one of our facilities to learn the basics of data processing. At the same time, they carry out assignments with a host company.
To become a Data work-study student, you need to enroll in a school that offers this type of training. The next step is to find an employer. The training organization can help you with this step.
The pace of training varies from school to school. This is usually agreed by both parties. For example, this could mean every other week at the company, or 2 days in class and 3 days at the company.
What contract should I sign for a work-study placement in the data industry?
There are two types of contracts available for work-study training in the data industry:
- apprenticeship contracts: these involve initial training that gives young people the chance to take their first steps in the professional world. It is aimed at young people aged 16 to 29, or minors aged 15 with special dispensation. There is no age limit for candidates with disabilities. This is also the case for people planning to set up or take over a business. Upon completion, students obtain a state diploma or professional qualification registered with the RNCP.
- Contrat de professionnalisation (professional training contract): this provides ongoing training leading to a state diploma, vocational qualification certificate or RNCP title. This contract is designed for young people aged 16 to 25 who wish to complete their initial training. It is also open to jobseekers over 26 registered with Pôle Emploi. This course is suitable for people on minimum social benefits and disabled workers.
What are the advantages of a work-study program in the data sector?
Participating in a work-study program in the data industry offers a number of invaluable advantages, such as :
- a unique and enriching learning experience: by alternating theoretical and practical courses, students acquire cross-disciplinary professional skills. This includes time management, problem solving, effective communication and adaptability;
- effective professionalization: work-study students benefit from better professional integration and an understanding of the requirements of the data industry. The know-how acquired is directly applicable in the workplace;
- appropriate remuneration: the alternating student’s salary is calculated on the basis of the French minimum wage (SMIC). It should be noted that the remuneration for a professionalization contract is higher than that for an apprenticeship contract. An apprentice earns between 21% and 100% of the SMIC, depending on age and year of study. A work-study student earns between 55% and 100% of the minimum wage;
- payment of tuition fees: with a Data work-study contract, students benefit from the same financial advantages as employees. Companies cover the cost of training;
- financial assistance: a number of grants are available to help work-study students finance their accommodation and travel. There is, for example, the Aide Personnalisée au Logement (APL) paid by the Caisse d’Allocations Familiales (CAF). They can also benefit from assistance in obtaining their driver’s license or a reduction in transportation costs.

To find a work-study program in the data sector, there are a number of sites specializing in digital professions. They advertise numerous job offers, including work-study opportunities in the data field. However, it is advisable to use relevant keywords to refine searches. Is it possible to do a work-study program in data at ECE?
ECE offers the possibility of a work-study program in data. It is accessible from the 2ᵉ year of the engineering cycle (ING4). The data & AI major in the engineering cycle is specifically designed to be taken on a sandwich course.
This 2-year course offers complete immersion in the field of data. Students follow courses taught in English for the initial course and a French learning component. In the course of professionalization, students develop an in-depth understanding of Big Data issues. They learn to handle large quantities of data and acquire the skills to implement intelligent solutions.
