Relationship with training

The first mission of the research center is to create a link with training through the courses taught by teacher-researchers in the School’s various majors, and through projects that involve students in research activities.

The LyRIDS deploys an innovative strategy that enriches teaching and provides students with insight into scientific issues and societal and environmental questions in the fields of health, energy, transport, the environment and finance, in line with the majors taught at the School, and at the confluence of several disciplines that make up the School’s know-how.

In order to discover the world of research, students have two anchor points during their engineering training. The first is their enrolment in the 4th year of the “Research & Development” minor, which aims to introduce students to academic and applied research and R&D, and to deepen their knowledge of a particular theme. Part of the first semester is devoted to visits to research organizations. During these visits and through presentations and demonstrations, they learn about the teams’ research work. These visits are much appreciated by the students, who naturally decide on a project topic for each team. In the second half of the year, students also have the opportunity to attend lectures given by researchers from the academic and R&D community. The second anchor point is the “Initiation Recherche & Innovation (IRI)” axis for student projects (VPE). This area enables students to present their research work (Posters), supervised by ECE teacher-researchers, at recognized international conferences.

The students’ work is also showcased at the Journée des Jeunes Chercheurs (JJC) organized every year on the ECE campus. During the day, doctoral students present their research work in a poster session, and lectures are given by world-renowned guest researchers.

The students’ work is the subject of scientific publications and technology transfers (creation of start-ups), as part of the Student Projects program.

Since 2017, the research center has published 37 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 109 papers in international conferences, and 9 doctoral theses have been defended. These many and varied interactions with researchers during their training encourage students to go further by taking part in internships offered by the ECE research center, and even to pursue a doctorate. Today, ECE has more than 50 students enrolled in the “Research & Development” minor (vs. 7 in 2017), more than 150 students enrolled in the “Initiation Recherche & Innovation (IRI)” valorization program (vs. 40 in 2017), 10 ECE students on research internships (vs. 2 in 2017) and 5 students pursuing theses at ECE since 2017. It’s difficult to quantify the number of students who go on to study in other research organizations, but it’s clear that the ECE research model appeals to students and makes them want to discover the world of research.

Academic and industrial relations

This structuring around an interdisciplinary program has led to numerous scientific collaborations with national research organizations and industry. The framework and specific agreements signed with research organizations enable the ECE research center :

  • Register doctoral students with doctoral schools.
  • Co-supervise PhD students with thesis directors attached to the organizations.
  • Produce joint publications.
  • Access to specific high-tech scientific equipment.
  • Sign EC secondments to research organizations and competitiveness clusters such as VEDECOM (of which ECE is a member).
  • Offer CIFRE theses with industry and academic organizations.

International Relations

Our teaching and research staff play an active role in promoting international research in a variety of ways:

  • Presentation of papers published in refereed conference proceedings.
  • Participation in program, reading and organization committees for international conferences.
  • Supervision of international students as part of the ERASMUS program and research internships. Since 2017, the research center has welcomed around ten students.
  • Inviting world-renowned guest researchers to present papers.
  • Participation in the outgoing mobility program to carry out a teaching and research stay in a foreign organization.
